looks like the hard work of untold volunteers and the Thai army is paying of. Very little ingress of water into the village. For today this wall and it's builders are my heroes. It was great to meet a lot of folks from all walks of life in the picket line. The kids and i will go again tonight and see if they have work for us. I'll fly of to BOM tomorrow feeling a little better and I'll be back right in time for the "big one" to hit BKK :bullseye:

This what my neighbor just send ... Hi Eugen:

I am sending two files here. One shows the general topographic of Bangkok which is about 2 meter below water/sea level at present. We are living at the bottom of a Wok.

The other file came from my neighbor’s graphics showing our own Muang Ake Village which is also about 2 meter below the river level. The earthen dike around the compound is what saved us in the past. Now, however, with the flood water level threatens to go higher than the height of the earthen dike, now reinforced with sandbags to an additional height of .50 meter of which there is only .30 meter margin of safety left.

On Friday evening, Oct. 7, two sections of the sandbags wall on our earthen dike gave in. the water started to pour in. Fortunately, hundreds of volunteers managed to plug the breaches.

Other pressing factor is the fact that between Oct. 10-14, the water from up north (which has reached Ayudhya now, will be here. The volume of water is about 200 million cubic meter per day. The volume we could presently pump out to the Gulf is less than 80 millin cubic meter. So you can imagine where the excess water will go. Our earthen dike will not be enough.

Ordinarily, the natural floods will come and go by natural drainage. However with our lovely Bangkok being 2 meter + under the sea level, flood water will come in and stay and will have to be pumped out which could take at least a week.

I hope I am wrong. But just in case, move valuable stuffs onto the second floor now. And stock lots of canned foods and beers !

Regards,

After breakfast I'll go and have a quick look at the two flood gates close to us. Pumps have protected the klong closest to us. The klong in the north is the one everybody is watching and that is where my vdos have been made. That one is a bit shaky, but holding so far

Flood prevention measures for Bangkok have not been completed and the government is racing against time to prevent the capital being inundated, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra admitted on Monday.

The prime minister discussed the situation with senior officials at the government's flood relief centre at Don Mueang airport on Monday morning. They agreed that Bangkok needs three strong floodwalls upstream along the Chao Phraya River for protection.

The floodwalls will be built in Muang Ake housing estate in Pathum Thani, Rangsit Khlong 5 area and Taling Chan area behind Mahidol University. They will block floodwater from upper areas and divert it via the eastern and western outskirts of the capital to the sea, she said.

Through the eastern side, floodwater from the Pasak river will be diverted to Khlong Rapeepat and Saen Sap canals and discharged into the sea.

On the western side, water will be directed through the Tha Chin river into the sea.

Ms Yingluck said the floodwall in Muang Ake housing estate will be 10 kilometres long. The floodwall in Rangsit Khlong 5 area requires 1.5 million sandbags.

The government was addressing the problem of a shortage of sandbags and seeking quick resupply from the private sector. The government would buy all the sandbags available from the private sector to complete the floodwalls for Bangkok as soon as possible.

Justice Minister Pracha Promnok who heads the government's flood relief centre at Don Mueang airport expressed concern about the construction of the floodwalls in Muang Ake housing estate, Rangsit Khlong 5 and Taling Chan. He said he would try to have the floodwalls completed on the three locations within Oct 13 to protect Bangkok.

Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Theera Wongsamut said a high pressure system from China was reducing the rains in Thailand. The amount of water in the Chao Phraya river upstream of Bangkok was either stable or increasing only slightly, Mr Theera said.

Bangkok authorities should be able to cope with the water flowing down the Chao Phraya River, he said.

However, he was worried about floodwater expected to arrive from fields in Lop Buri and Ayutthaya provinces, and water from the Pasak River. The water would reach Muang Ake housing estate and Rangsit Khlong 5 area and strong floodwalls must be completed there as soon as possible, Mr Theera said
