COMPANY PROFILE

Extrema Ratio, located in Prato, Italy, has been designing, manufacturing and selling high performance combat knives since 1997 enjoying a reputation for excellence that is unsurpassed in the military and tactical knife industry. The increased capacity through the years enabled Extrema Ratio to extend its operations. As part of this effort, the company moved in 2004 to a new 600 square meter facility in order to meet the market demand and the company quickly established itself as one of the country's leading cutlery manufacturers.
Extrema Ratio serves military and law enforcement communities as well as commercial markets and the knives are well known and sought after all over the globe. The company prides itself in design, material and quality to deliver a high end product that meets the most severe mil-standards. The production based on modern cutting edge technology is combined with traditional craftsmanship and the result is the pinnacle of this synthesis. The Extrema Ratio design team uses the 3D system to design new models and create prototypes. Each knife design is then meticulously inspected and then field tested. At this point the finest materials are chosen for durability, function and beauty. Each knife is then hand assembled and hand finished and inspected by Extrema Ratio team of craftsmen.
First class handwork and well-selected material have contributed to form the image of the Extrema Ratio trademark all over the world.
Each knife that is manufactured at Extrema Ratio has measured up to the Company rigorous standards for quality and performance. The knives are the result of painstaking research and development. This is an Extrema Ratio hallmark. Extrema Ratio knives represent a real, solid value for the money.
All of the knives are made from N690 Cobalt Stainless Steel which is a steel from a small plant in Austria, often used in the manufacture of surgical instruments. This steel along with their tempering methods produce a steel of great strength, flexibility with the capability to take and retain a razor sharp edge. The handles provided on the fixed blade knives are made from a grip polymer called Forprene which provides a very sure and comfortable grip even when wet. The folding range of knives have a shell made from a super strong anticorodal alloy and the best materials are used throughout to ensure reliability and longevity.
Extrema Ratio military knives are consistently developed with the direct involvement of the end user.
Extrema Ratio creates a great range of tough knives suitable for use in the toughest of environments, making them a great choice for a survival knife or back up tool. The range goes from small folders to large Kukri with lots of choice in between offering most of what you would need in the knife area.
Extrema Ratio knives are developed in close cooperation with the Italian and foreign Armed Forces. To achieve best performance and function, no compromises are made in the design. This makes Extrema Ratio Knives best known for their outstanding ruggedness and they are sturdy enough to meet the requirements of the toughest military standards.
To reach all of the above, a long term co-operation project between the Facoltà di Scienze Motorie (PG) and Extrema Ration Company has been set up. Through the challenges associated with resolving technical issues, finding an efficient and ergonomic design and optimal operating parameter, the Facoltà di Scienze Motorie (PG) partnership has provided innovative opportunities through the whole manufacturing process.

Extrema Ratio is UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 certified and is an official supplier of the Armed Forces with NATO code (N/CAGE) AD856

PRODUCTION

From state-of-the-art manufacturing to advanced materials, customers rely on Extrema Ratio for products that provide technology with an edge.
Since 1997, Extrema Ratio has been committed to making unique designs at quality levels that rival custom, hand-made knives. Today, each knife crafted by Extrema Ratio is hand-finished and hand-sharpened by craftsmen dedicated to creating the very best possible. Each knife features specially designed blades for strength and superior performance and that’s just one reason to trust Extrema Ratio name. At Extrema Ratio, each knife means Company Perfection.

At Extrema Ratio we have a skilled and experienced work force capable of performing many of the extra hand operations that go into the making of our products. The Extrema Ratio cutlery factory is unique. It is full self-contained. In all these years Extrema Ratio combined the uniformity and production volumes of industrial automation with the high quality and attention to detail of hand finishing. We do most of the main production processes in-house: from grinding and assembly and hand finishing our products. These steps insure that Extrema Ratio knives are of excellent quality and a real value for the end user.

It is in this process that rests the difference between mass production and handcrafted production, which is the only way to guarantee that each knife is unique.

MATERIALS

BLADES
Extrema Ratio uses N690 - 58 HRC Stainless Cobalt Steel in the large majority of its knives because the additional cobalt content adds strength to the blade.
Suffice to say that the type of steel used to make Extrema Ratio knives makes them quite unique and very strong. The metal content of that "stainless cobalt steel" has been specifically calculated to provide steel that would hold an edge well without being so brittle that it might fracture easily - or easier than competitor knives. What make the steel unique are the higher levels of chrome and cobalt than normally found in most other steel alloys.

FIXED BLADE HANDLES
With the co-operation of the Facoltà di Scienze Motorie of the University of Perugia Extrema Ratio has developed a special handle called ERMH (Extrema Ratio Multipurpose Handle).
The grips are a single piece cut to comfortably fit the user hand to help in maintaining a secure grip even under wet, sweaty or bloody conditions.
The use of Mil-spec materials for the handles like Kraton, Forprene and special polymers add extra quality details to the final product.

FOLDER KNIFE HANDLES
The material used is black anodized Anticorodal: a strong non-corrosive aluminium alloy of Swiss origin. Heat treated has a tensile strength of approximately 20 tons per square inch. The alloy is noted for its high strength and toughness, corrosion resistance to water and wearing. Handle components are made of the same material of the blades that is N690 - 58 HRC Stainless Cobalt Steel in order to meet AISI 304 and AISI 303 specifications. The process is done according to the mil-spec MIL-C-13924.
All the components are coated in a long-lasting black carbonitride process. Folder handles are manufactured following a proper ergonomic design as used for the fixed blade knives.
Most of the folder knives have either a Widia, tungsten-carbide cobalt, or hardened and tempered steel glass breaker tip.

FOLDER KNIFE LOCKING SYSTEM
Two locking mechanisms are used in the folder knives: the LOCK BACK and LINER LOCK.
The former is a basic functional lock. In practice the lock design positions a stop bar parallel to and in direct line with the blade at the upper back or rear tang of the blade to lock the blade open. As the blade is rotated open, the spring tensioned, center pivoted stop bar tracks around the circular portion of the blade tang until it drops or locks into the notched out tang. This style of locking mechanism requires two hands to safely close the blade although you may still easily open the blade single-handed if desired. The latter is a mechanism that when the blade of the knife is in the opened position, it is held in place by a leaf spring (also called a lock bar) that butts up against the tang of the blade to prevent the blade from closing. To release the lock, the user must press the lock bar back toward the handle side, at which time the blade is allowed to close. In the closed position the lock bar rests alongside the handle and the blade.

SHEATHS
All of the sheaths are well-designed for special operations usage. They offer friction and snap retention and allow the knife to be worn low on the thigh or affixed in other ways as well.
A lot of attention has been given to the manufacturing process as they are considered the link between the operator and the knife. The heavy duty sheaths are unique and specially designed according to the knife they have to accommodate.
The rigid sheath is made of ABS plastic and can be worn mounted on webbing compatible with any PALS/MOLLE system. Some use a TEK-LOK fastener.
Some sheaths are composed of two detachable parts: the soft part is made of polyamide bonded with polyethylene while the hard part in ABS plastic welded together with a specialised binary epoxy.
The elastic straps and webbing are doubled for durability and are made of Cordura®. The snap fasteners are specifically designed for wet environments and are wear and corrosion resistant. Two ambidextrous quick release systems are used: one manual and one pressure operated. The pressure operated system acts as a safety as well though preventing the knife to be accidentally dislodged. The hard sheath combined with a sleek design makes a safe and effective solution for use in airborne operations. This allows the knife to be carried safely and firmly. Some of the sheaths incorporate a diamond sharpening plate.
